The Cruel Prince Review

Synopsis: Of course, I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.
And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.
Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.
To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.
As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her own capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.
Quote: “I am going to keep on defying you. I am going to shame you with my defiance. You remind me that I am a mere mortal and you are a prince of Faerie. Well, let me remind you that means you have much to lose and I have nothing. You may win in the end, you may ensorcell me and hurt me and humiliate me, but I will make sure you lose everything I can take from you on the way down. I promise you this is the least of what I can do.”
Thoughts: I don't know what I thought going into this book but it was kind of a disappointment. Maybe I'm out of my YA era, maybe it was just the writing, I don't know. I actually have this book a 2.5 rating and it's only because this story was extremely boring and predictable.
It seemed to me while reading that there was a disconnect in the character-building as well as the world-building. I didn't care about any of the characters or anything that was happening, I was just wondering when something WAS going to happen.
Now, I got lucky enough to go into this book with zero knowledge, so I wasn't tainted by TikTok's false advertisement of the book. This story is NOT an enemies to lovers, this is not a romance whatsoever. It's more about the political intrigue which I can respect, BUT it felt like nothing happened in this book. I hated that too because this book had so much potential to be great. I just could tell where the story was going and nothing was surprising to me. Not even the bug twist toward the end.
With all that negativity aside though, the story was okay for what it was, and it kept my interest enough to not only finish it but also purchase the sequel. I know that stories like this take a little time to build up so, I'm willing to give it a chance and see if it's as good as everyone makes it out to be. I am hopeful because the first ACOTAR book was pretty slow and the series is now one of my favorites of all time.
Anyway, that's all for today!
Bye!
